Guidelines to follow for winter watering your new plants
Water for your new plants is essential even during the winter. If we get good rains and/or snow during the winter the plants will be in good shape but if our winter is dry, an occasional watering will ensure that plants get through the winter in good shape. Do not fertilize the plants the first year and do not use fertilizer spikes. They can burn up roots because of heavy salt concentration.
Watch your plants for signs of stress. Over or under watering is usually the leading cause of plant loss. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to check plants on a regular basis to ensure enough water is being applied. S&E Ward’s Landscaping will not warranty any plants lost due to improper watering. Stakes, wire, hoses, or ropes that have been used to support some of your planting materials should be taken off after one year if plant material appears to be stable. If allowed to stay on, the wire or ropes will grow into the plant, causing damage and ultimately the death of the plant. If wraps were used for trees planted during the fall, they should be removed the following spring. Ultimately you, the homeowner, are responsible to watch your landscape and care for it.
