Guidelines to follow for winter watering your new plants

Water for your new plants is essential even during the winter. If we get good rains and/or snow during the winter the plants will be in good shape but if our winter is dry, an occasional watering will ensure that plants get through the winter in good shape. Do not fertilize the plants the first year and do not use fertilizer spikes. They can burn up roots because of heavy salt concentration.

Weed mat cloth does not give 100% barrier for weed growth although it does help restrain weed growth considerably. However, weed seeds find mulch or gravel an ideal place to germinate. A homeowner should expect to see weed growth as time goes on. Keeping some herbicide available to use in combat for new weeds is a practical idea. This will help keep rock or mulch beds clean, and insure that your investment looks high-quality for years to come. Use of chemicals will aid in removing unwanted vegetation from the landscape, always follow instructions.

Applying a water based sealer to help prevent chipping or weathering of surface areas is a good idea. Follow the label instructions. S & E Ward’s Landscape is not responsible for sealer damage.
